Here’s a breakdown of the main physical and on-screen controls you’ll use when shooting photos and video on iPhone 13 and later. Unlike dedicated cameras, these rely on a combination of hardware buttons and the Camera app’s touchscreen UI.

Customization & Tips

Configure Back Tap

Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap → set Double/Triple Tap to “Launch Camera” for quick access.

Use Photographic Styles

In Photo mode, swipe up on viewfinder → Photographic Styles (Standard, Rich Contrast, Vibrant, Warm, Cool). These apply Smart HDR adjustments in-camera.

Enable ProRAW/ProRes (Pro models)

Settings → Camera → Formats → turn on Apple ProRAW or ProRes for maximum post-processing latitude.

Lock AE/AF for Consistency

Long-press on your main subject until “AE/AF Lock” appears. Re-compose without the camera re-metering.

Use Focus Peaking & Histogram

Settings → Camera → Composition → turn on Focus Peaking (Pro models) for manual focus guides, and Histogram to monitor exposure.

QuickTake Video

In Photo mode, hold the shutter button to record video without switching modes. Slide right to lock recording hands-free.

Macro Mode (iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max)

When you get very close to a subject, the Ultra-Wide lens switches to a macro capture. You can toggle Macro control in Settings → Camera.
